Be Aware of Scams

The Texas Attorney General’s office of Consumer Protection is warns against unsolicited door-to-door home improvement offers. To avoid contractor scams:

  • Get their name, phone number, and address.
  • Ask for references and call them.
  • Get more than one bid.
  • Get bids in writing.
  • Do not sign anything you do not understand.
  • Do not pay in cash.
  • Insist on paying the final amount only after all work is completed.
  • Avoid contractors who offer to waive your deductible or promise a rebate for it. That’s illegal under state law and your insurance company may ask for proof that you paid it.
  • It is against the law for contractors in disaster areas to take any money upfront unless they had a local office in your county or a neighboring county for at least one year.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has warned that imposters are impersonating a utility company and threatening to shutoff the consumer’s power.

  • Do not give away your private account numbers.
  • If you receive any unsolicited calls, contact your electric provider using a number on your bill.
